David M. O’Brien
Senior Technical Consultant, Integrated Test and Measurement (ITM)

David O’Brien’s engineering career spans more than 35 years, serving at both Honeywell (formerly AlliedSignal) and Deere & Co. During his career, he has focused on testing, data analysis, dynamics, noise control, and program management. He also has 25 years of experience using the technical computing language MATLAB®. He brings a wide range of experience to his role as technical consultant at Integrated Test and Measurement (ITM).

Most recently, David served as an engineering analyst at Honeywell Aircraft Landing Systems, where he worked with project engineering, quality, and original equipment customers to resolve manufacturing, performance, and cost issues.

While at Honeywell, David:

  • Developed test and analysis procedures for effectively monitoring product performance;
  • Formulated statistical process control (SPC) procedures for friction material manufacturing;
  • Developed software for tracking scrapped and/or reworked discrepant material;
  • Maintained monthly metrics to track factory capability; and
  • Worked with engineering to resolve design and/or manufacturing product performance issues.

His work in spearheading operational design changes and manufacturing enhancements saved the company more than $1 million annually. David’s technique for statistically analyzing the performance of a portion of the brake also reduced testing costs for one customer by 85 percent.

David was awarded the Honeywell Aerospace Technical Achievement Award for obtaining production approval of cost reduction programs from Honeywell’s original equipment manufacturer customers. David was also awarded Honeywell’s Customer Satisfaction Award.

At the John Deere Product Engineering Center, David worked with a team of design and development engineers to ensure products met design goals and industry standards. In John Deere’s Applied Mechanics group, he solved noise and vibration problems on row crop and 4WD Tractors. While there, the tractors he helped develop obtained some of the lowest operator sound levels recorded in national tests.

David holds a Bachelor of Science and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University and has served as a part-time instructor in the Engineering Departments of three universities.
