25 Years, One Roof: ITM Turns 25

Tim Carlier, founder of ITM, working on a laptop at a conference table, with strain gauge, sensor network and vibration spectrum sketches on the whiteboard behind him.

Integrated Test & Measurement was founded in 2001. Twenty-five years later we are still in Milford, Ohio, still taking measurement problems from the first question to the finished answer — and we have rebuilt our website around the way that work actually gets done.

Where It Started

ITM began in Tim Carlier’s basement in 2001 with a simple aim: help companies cut costs and work more efficiently across product development, manufacturing and production. A few months later Tim added his first employee and opened the Milford office.

By 2003 Tim was developing boiler monitoring, feedback and control processes to help clients reduce energy costs — work that grew into the patented monitoring systems now installed in recovery and power boilers worldwide. Then an international off-highway client asked ITM to build a custom software package for delivering test data. That project became iTestSystem, which launched in 2007 and took ITM from a hardware-and-services firm to one that also delivers complete software solutions.

What 25 Years Built

  • Clients on five continents — in pulp & paper, automotive, off-highway, aerospace, consumer products, machine tool, medical and other manufacturing markets.
  • More than 40 recovery boilers monitored by ITM systems.
  • Patented boiler monitoring technology, in the US and internationally — see our patents.
  • iTestSystem, our configuration-based measurement software, still a free download.
  • A recognized National Instruments (NI) Partner.

Engineer It. Measure It. Monitor It.

Over 25 years the work has settled into three connected disciplines, and the new site is organized the same way:

  • Engineering — develop, build and diagnose: structural and mechanical testing, road load data acquisition, rugged measurement systems, engineering consulting and measurement software.
  • Instrumentation — measure the real asset: strain gauge installation, vibration, temperature and acoustic sensing, data acquisition (including DAQ rentals) and wireless sensor networks.
  • Edge Solutions — monitor it continuously: ten packaged monitoring solutions, wireless and wired edge nodes, and the platform that turns sensor data into dashboards and alerts.

Most projects touch more than one. A test campaign becomes a permanent monitoring system; a strain gauge installation becomes a continuous measurement. Keeping all three under one roof is what lets one team carry a problem from the first question to the system that keeps watching it.

A New Website to Match

The new itestsystem.com went live in September. A few places worth a look:

  • Start where your problem is — the home page asks whether you have a measurement challenge, need hard numbers off a real asset, or need to keep watching continuously, and takes you straight to the right team.
  • Industries — pages for aerospace & defense, automotive, civil infrastructure, energy, marine, off-highway and pulp & paper.
  • Resources — more than 150 case studies, application notes and technical articles in one library.
  • Hardware Collection — the edge nodes, data acquisition and compute hardware ITM can provide as part of a monitoring application.

Thank You

Twenty-five years in, our thanks go to the clients who bring us their hardest measurement problems, to the engineers and technicians who solve them, and to the partners we build with.

Have a measurement challenge, or a system you would like to keep watching? Talk to the engineers who design it, instrument it and monitor it — under one roof.
